I once held a hedgehog.

Years ago, at the senior school where I taught, one of the Art teachers who lived on a farm on the outskirts of Harare brought in one of his hedgehogs. I love their spikes, their soft underbellies, their cute noses.

But over the last few days, I've  been pondering.

How do you hug one?

How do you love someone who has wound barbed wire so tightly around their heart that it is inflicts deadly pain daily to themselves?

Pain they can't seem to escape from.
Pain that prevents anyone from coming close or even allowing themselves to be physically held.
Pain that prevents them from receiving love, or loving.
Pain that prevents them from being vulnerable.

A dry, parched soul lies snared in barbed wire...trapped.

How does one love through that?

How does one reach in to share that water of Life?
