I love words.

Words of every shape and size.

What they mean, their history, their origins, their use.
Etymology for short. (Not be confused with entomology!!)
It all fascinates me....

....and that explains my fascination with the following definition, showcased on a recent e-loop. For me it showcases how the meaning of a word has changed as time progresses, and how that change can reflect a shift in cultural values and/or practices:

WEBSTER'S 1828 DICTIONARY
EDUCATION, n. (L. education.) The bringing up, as of a child, instruction; formation of manners.  Education comprehends all that series of instruction and discipline which is intended to enlighten the understanding, correct the temper, and form the manners and habits of youth, and fit them for usefulness in their future stations.  To give children a good education in manners, arts, and science is important; to give them a religious education is indispensable; and an immense responsibility rests on parents and guardians who neglect these duties.

TODAY'S WEBSTER DICTIONARY
EDUCATION
1. The process of training and developing the knowledge, skill, mind, character, etc., especially by formal schooling (hmm, interesting...not by family?) 2. knowledge, ability, etc. thus developed  3. formal schooling at an institution of learning 4. systematic study of the methods and theories of teaching and learning. (italics mine)

Read them through again and notice the differences. Fascinating hey?

Food for thought huh?
